Nigerian Dwarf Goats
This Small Goat Breed is Lovable and Gentle, and Produces a Surprising Amount of milk!
The Nigerian Dwarf is a Miniature Dairy Goat
A Nigerian Dwarf doe can produce a surprising amount of milk for her small size – up to 2 quarts per day which is half a gallon of milk!. Nigerian Dwarf goat milk is higher in butterfat (6-10%) than most dairy goat breeds. However, Nigerian Dwarfs can equally be used for companionship!
The Nigerian Dwarf goat is a small framed goat of West African origin. Their small stature has many benefits including smaller cost in upkeep and feed costs compared to larger dairy goat breeds. Their gentle and friendly personalities make them a great starting point for a new goat owner and milker as well. They are easy to handle and occasionally lift onto the milking table! The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved the Nigerian Dwarf goat as a livestock dairy goat, which makes them eligible for youth 4H!
Nigerian Dwarf Breed Standard
A Nigerian Dwarf goat’s conformation is similar to that of the larger dairy goat breeds. The parts of the body are in balanced proportion. The nose is straight, although there may be a small break or stop at the level of the eyes. The ears are upright. The coat is soft with short to hair. Any color or combination of colors is acceptable.
The ideal height of Nigerian Dwarf goats is 17″ to 19″ for does with does up to 22.5″ allowed in the breed standard. Ideal height for bucks is 19″ to 21″ with bucks up to 23.5″ allowed in the breed standard. Ideal weight is suggested to be under 75 lbs. Animals are disqualified from the show ring for being oversized for the breed standard and/or for other faults: having a curly coat, roman nose, pendulous ears, or evidence of myotonia (a breed characteristic of fainting goats).
Gelnett's Goats Milk Soap
What is goat milk soap?
Goat milk soap is exactly what it sounds like — soap made from goat’s milk. Using goat milk and other fats for cosmetics and soaps stems back hundreds of years!
Our Goat milk soap is made via the traditional soap-making process known as saponification, which involves combining goats milk — fats and oils — with a base called lye.
In most soaps, lye is made by combining water and sodium hydroxide. However, when making goat milk soap, goat milk is used instead of water, allowing for a creamier consistency due to naturally occurring fats.
Goat milk is rich in both saturated and unsaturated fats, making it ideal for soap production. Saturated fats increase a soap’s lather — or production of bubbles — while unsaturated fats provide moisturizing and nourishing properties.
Plant-based oils like olive or coconut oil can be used in goat milk soap to further increase the content of healthy, nourishing fats. We currently use all natural olive oil and coconut oil!
Goat milk creates a soap that is creamy, gentle, and nourishing.
Benefits of goat milk soap
Goat milk soap has several beneficial characteristics that can help keep your skin looking and feeling great.
1. Gentle cleanser
Most commercially made soaps contain harsh surfactants that can strip your skin of natural moisture and oils, leaving it feeling dry. To maintain your skin’s natural moisture, it’s best to use products that don’t remove the natural fats in the skin barrier. Goat milk soap boasts high amounts of fats allowing for gentle removal of dirt and debris
2. Rich in nutrients
Goat milk is rich in fatty acids, cholesterol, vitamin A and selenium, a mineral shown to support healthy skin.
3. Natural exfoliant
Goat milk soap contains compounds that may exfoliate your skin.
4. Supports a healthy skin microbiome
Goat milk soap may support a healthy skin microbiome — the collection of healthy bacteria on your skin’s surface
5. May prevent acne
Due to its lactic acid content, goat milk soap may help control or prevent acne
Although promising, treatment for acne varies from person to person. Therefore, consult your dermatologist or other healthcare professional.
